There are some advantages to using mulch around trees in the yard. One of them is keeping moisture under ground. If you live in a dry area, mulch can help your trees retain a lot of water. When it rains, mulch absorbs water first, and then it lets water out over time, so trees can retain that water. The other advantage is the prevention of weeds.

If you go to nurseries or other box stores to buy mulch, you may be confused which mulch you have to choose from. There are more than 10 kinds of mulch that you can choose from. You can classify these kinds of mulch into organic and inorganic. Organic mulch is wood chips, compost, leaves, pine needles, and so on which is made up of living ingredients. Some people even make their own mulch with leftover vegetable and fruit scraps. Inorganic mulch is rocks, rubber pieces, pebbles, lava rocks and etc. When organic mulch breaks down into the soil, the nutrients from the mulch go into the soil as well. However, organic mulch does not last long. On the other hand, inorganic mulch is long-lasting and durable, but there is no nutritional benefit. You can choose the right kind for the garden with that small tip.

Before applying the chosen mulch, you should clean up around the tree base, removing weeds and other debris. This will give mulch a more proper area to rest, and it will eventually be better for the trees. It is simple applying mulch. You can sprinkle mulch around the tree base and pack it down to make settle. When you use compost or pine needles as mulch, make sure you apply it all around the tree base, expanding 8-12 inches out in a radius. Too much is as bad as too little. Too much mulch may be harmful for the trees. It is not an immediate action, but it will make trees slow down to intake nutrients and will cause slow growing and other health problems of trees. The mulch layer should not be higher than 3 inches and should be separated from the tree base about 2 inches, regardless of the tree’s height and size.
